Raikkonen and Alonso escape punishment after crash
Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso were both cleared of any fault after their opening-lap crash at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Neither Kimi Raikkonen nor Fernando Alonso will face further action after their collision at the Austrian Grand Prix.
On the opening lap of Sunday's race in Spielberg, the former Ferrari team-mates came together in dramatic fashion after Raikkonen appeared to lose the back of his car.
Alonso – who had made up positions through the opening turns – was unable to avoid the Finn and quickly found his McLaren on top of Raikkonen's Ferrari in the barriers.
"Kimi was on the prime tyre so he exited turn two with a lot of wheelspin so the car was moving and we were all overtaking him left and right, and at one point he lost the car to the left and I was on the left," Alonso explained after the race.
"We both went in to the wall and I was lucky not to hit him on the head because looking at the replay I was obviously braking but my wheels were in the air."
Raikkonen was less clear on what led to the shunt: "I don't know what happened, I had wheelspin and it went left, then I was out."
Having reviewed the incident, an FIA statement confirmed neither driver would face any punishment.
It read: "The stewards, having received a report from the race director, heard from both drivers and team representatives, and examined video evidence, have considered the following matter and determine the following.
"No driver was at fault. No further action warranted."
