Langley leads Greenbrier Classic, Woods finds 'rhythm'
Tiger Woods found "a little bit of rhythm" on Thursday, while Scott Langley set the early pace at the Old White TPC.
Scott Langley carded a bogey-free eight-under 62 to take an early lead at the Greenbrier Classic, while Tiger Woods showed some form, birdying his last three holes.
Langley notched four birdies on both the front and back nines at the Old White TPC in West Virginia on Thursday to claim the overall lead following the first round, with Jonathan Byrd and New Zealand's Danny Lee sharing second position at seven under.
For Woods - who missed the cut by 11 shots at the U.S. Open - the opening round in White Sulphur Springs was vindication.
"Even though my scores don't indicate it, my swings don't indicate it... my feels were telling me that I wasn't that far off," Woods said, via PGATour.com.
"I was proving it to myself time and time again away from a tournament site and on the range, but my feel in my hands and my body weren't far off.
"It was just a matter of just getting into a little bit of the rhythm and the flow of it, and I found that."
The 39-year-old has had a tough year with an ongoing back injury and was written off by just about everyone after shooting 80-76 at Chambers Bay in June, but the former world number one showed something on Thursday.
Woods started on the back nine and birdied the 12th, 15th and 16th holes, before a bogey on the 17th halted his momentum slightly.
The veteran bounced back on the second hole to pick up a shot and, although he double-bogeyed the sixth, birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth would have given him some joy.
Woods finished tied for 12th at four under alongside 14 others.
Brian Davis and Ryo Ishikawa claimed a share of fourth at six under at the PGA Tour event, while six players finished a further shot back - one ahead of Woods' group - including Greg Owen, Brendon Todd and Kevin Na.
