Wolves welcome league leaders Liverpool to Molineux on Monday evening in the third round of the FA Cup, with the Reds looking to bounce back from their first league defeat of the season. You can catch all the action from the third round clash Live & Exclusive with beIN CONNECT.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had a mixed run of festive fixtures which saw them defeat title contenders Tottenham, whilst losing at home to Crystal Palace. The FA Cup represents an opportunity of some silverware for the Midlands side, who last lifted the world’s oldest cup competition all the way back in 1960.
Wolves have quickly settled in the Premier League after promotion and currently sit in ninth place. With the side unlikely to be pulled into a relegation dogfight a Cup run could be just what the side needs. Especially considering how Wolves have tended to up their game against sides in the top six.
Impressive results against Arsenal, Man United, Man City & Chelsea would suggest that Wolves would be well up for the visit of Liverpool. Although Klopp’s side did come away with a 2-0 victory when the Reds headed to Molineux in December.
In team news, Santo is likely to freshen up the side to give some opportunists for players on the fringes of the squad. Rui Patricio is likely to be replaced by English keeper John Ruddy, whilst Diego Jota could play a part in the side after missing the last four games through injury. After being dropped in the last few weeks, Reuben Neves could partner João Moutinho in central midfield.
Predicted Team - Ruddy; Bennett, Coady, Dendoncker; Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Vinagre; Gibbs-White; Bonatini, Traore
As for Liverpool, they will be looking to get their 2019 back on track following their 2-1 defeat to title rivals Manchester City. Still, the Reds still have a four-point cushion at the top of the table and will be looking to defend their lead to win the league for the first time since 1990.
With Liverpool in such a strong position in the league, this could leave Jurgen Klopp with a conundrum when it comes to selection for this match. A weakened side would give the opportunity to rest some key players after a gruelling run of festive fixtures.
However, the clash against a fellow Premier League side could pose a real threat, which could mean that Klopp could lean towards a stronger selection. This time last year, Liverpool was knocked out in the fourth round to then Premier League side West Brom.
In team news, Simon Mignolet is likely to get the nod over Allison in goal. Alberto Moreno should start at left back whilst Naby Keita, Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge will be pushing for a start after not starting against Manchester City.
Predicted Team - Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Moreno; Milner, Fabinho, Keita; Shaqiri, Sturridge, Mane
