Taylor targets Headingley victory
Old Trafford centurion James Taylor is eyeing another strong one-day international showing from England at Headingley.
James Taylor knows England must maintain the high standards they set at Old Trafford when they attempt to level the one-day international series against Australia at Headingley on Friday.
Taylor scored his maiden international century as England beat the tourists by 93 runs in Manchester on Tuesday to keep the series alive at 2-1 with two matches remaining.
The 25-year-old batsman made 101 as England posted 300-8 and only Aaron Finch (53) made a half-century in Australia's 207 all out in reply.
It was a dominant display from England, with Jason Roy setting the tone by making 63 from only 45 balls and captain Eoin Morgan making a brisk 62 before Taylor held the innings together as wickets fell at the other end.
Spinners Adil Rashid (2-41) and Moeen Ali (3-32) then starred with the ball, while Steven Finn and Roy took outstanding catches, so it is all to play for heading to Leeds.
And Taylor is determined to build on such an impressive showing against the world champions.
He told ecb.co.uk: "It is another must-win game at Headingley.
"We have performed exceptionally well [in the third ODI] and hopefully we can take that confidence and the performance we have put in to Headingley."
Taylor's first ODI ton came in his 21th match and he was understandably relieved to end his wait to finally bring up three figures for his country.
"I am delighted and most importantly in a match-winning situation. We got the side up to a total that we knew we could defend on a tricky wicket," said the Nottinghamshire man.
"The special thing about it is that we were under the pump, knew it was a must-win game and performed when we needed to.
"On a surface like that it sometimes wasn't easy to get in on. When the slower bowlers came on it was tricky.
"When you have got Eoin Morgan smacking it around at the other end it was exactly what I needed to do."
An encouraging ODI debut from Ashton Agar (1-45) was a positive for Australia, but Mitchell Starc had a day to forget as he recorded figures of 1-79 from his 10 overs.
If England can level the series in Leeds then they will return to Old Trafford on Sunday for a series decider to try and pull off a stunning turnaround.
