Moeen double lifts England after Smith ton
Steve Smith completed a century on the second morning of the final Ashes Test, but two late wickets for Moeen Ali gave England a real boost.
Moeen Ali struck twice in the final over before lunch to breathe new life into the final Ashes Test after Steve Smith had completed his 11th Test century on the second morning.
The man who will succeed the retiring Michael Clarke as Australia's captain was unbeaten on 110 at the end of the first session, having been caught behind off a Steven Finn no-ball on 92, but Moeen's double breakthrough reduced the tourists to 376-7.
Australia, who have already lost the five-match series, initially made untroubled progress after resuming on 287-3 as Smith and Adam Voges extended a partnership worth 101 overnight.
However, Voges eventually fell lbw to Ben Stokes for 78 and Smith, on 92, edged the following delivery from Finn through to England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, only to be reprieved due to the bowler hugely overstepping.
Finn did claim a wicket - his 100th in Tests - soon after as Mitchell Marsh (3) hung his bat out to offer a catch to Ian Bell at second slip, but Smith battled through a few more nervous moments in the nineties to reach three figures for the second time in the series.
A single to mid-on off Moeen brought up Smith's hundred - at the venue where he made his first Test century two years ago - and he celebrated the landmark with a straight six later in the over.
Yet Moeen then had Peter Nevill (18) superbly caught down the leg side by Buttler in the final over of the session and Mitchell Johnson lasted just two balls before being bowled to herald lunch.
