Sri Lanka seamer Suranga Lakmal has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for bowling beamers during Sunday's World Cup clash with England.

Lakmal bowled a second consecutive high full-pitched ball to England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler in the 50th over of the contest at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

The fast bowler had previously received a warning from on-field umpire Rod Tucker earlier in the over and was then removed from bowling in compliance with the World Cup playing conditions after failing to heed that caution.

Lakmal pleaded guilty to breaching Article 2.1.8, that relates to "conduct contrary to the spirit of the game".

Match referee David Boon said: "While making my decision, I took into account that it is was dangerous and unfair bowling, there were no mitigating circumstances, and there was no remorse from the bowler."

Sri Lanka won the match by nine wickets as they reached 312-1 with 16 balls to spare in response to England's 309-6.
