Kumar Sangakkara retirement: What they said
Kumar Sangakkara has been hailed as a cricket legend after ending his stellar international career.
Legendary Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara's phenomenal international career came to an end following a 278-run defeat to India in the second Test in Colombo on Monday.
Sangakkara will go down as one of the greatest cricketers of all time and there have been a flood of tributes to the classy left-hander, who scored over 28,000 runs from almost 600 international appearances.
Here we look at some of the reaction to Sangakkara's retirement from selected team-mates, coaches and opponents.
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said: "I regret that we couldn't give Kumar a winning farewell. He's been an amazing servant of the game. It really pains me that we couldn't give him a good farewell, but I promise him that we will play the next game well and try to win the series for him."
Fellow Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene posted on Twitter: "It wasn't to be in this match, but what he was for SL cricket is something that you can't take away. Very proud of you mate @KumarSanga2."
India captain Virat Kohli: "I just want to congratulate Kumar again on a wonderful career. I have spoken a lot about him, everyone has, in the last week, but I can't help saying it again that it has been an absolute pleasure playing with you."
International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson: "In stepping off the field of play for the last time we wish Kumar and his family well and thank him for his enormous contribution to the game."
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke, who ended his international career a day earlier, tweeted: "Huge congrats to @KumarSanga2 on an amazing career. Great player and terrific guy."
England head coach Trevor Bayliss, a former Sri Lanka coach, told BBC Test Match Special: "He's one of the legends of the game. He's one of those local heroes that a lot of people in Sri Lanka look up to, and he's been a great role model. He's had so many great innings over a period of time. The poise and time that he's got at the crease has been one of his hallmarks."
Ex-Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody told Cricinfo: "The standout leadership skill with Kumar was setting the great example on and off the field. He was very thoughtful and articulate as well. A lot of players would gravitate towards him naturally and learn from his mature outlook on the game and on life. That has been one of the important features of Sri Lanka cricket - that they've had Kumar and Mahela as those godfather figureheads to guide the team and the next generation through."
Former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist: "I think he is one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game. There is absolutely no doubt about that. He is one of the terrific players of the game. I wish him all the best for the future."
