Virat Kohli scored yet another century and Murali Vijay also reached three figures to put India in command on day one of the one-off Test against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.

Kohli was in phenomenal form during a 4-0 drubbing of England late last year and it was the Bangladesh bowlers' turn to suffer at the hands of the classy India captain, who made his fourth hundred in his last seven Tests on Thursday.

The skipper was unbeaten on 111 at stumps after Vijay (108) made a superb ninth Test century and Cheteshwar Pujara broke the record for the most runs in an Indian first-class season as the top-ranked side in the world closed on 356-3.

Pujara (83) surpassed Chandu Borde's mark of 1604 in a domestic season during a second-wicket stand of 178 with Vijay – their fifth century partnership at home this season and eighth overall – to set the platform before the latest Kohli masterclass.

It had all started so well for the Tigers, with KL Rahul (2) chopping a Taskin Ahmed (1-58) delivery on in the first over of the day after Kohli had won the toss at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

Vijay and Pujara struggled to get going on a slow track, but Bangladesh were unable to make further inroads and Mehedi Hasan (1-93) failed to take advantage of a mix-up which saw the batsmen at the same end.

That proved to be costly as Vijay, who was on 35 at the time, and Pujara got into their stride after lunch, with the former launching Shakib Al Hasan for a straight six after cutting the all-rounder to the boundary.

The elegant Pujara treated the crowd to some glorious drives as he broke Borde's record that had stood since 1964-65, but was out off the next ball after passing that tally when Mehedi had him caught behind.

Kohli made his intent clear by sending two of his first three balls to the boundary and Vijay brought up a 149-ball ton, but was bowled around his legs by Taijul Islam (1-50) to leave India 234-3.

There was no shifting Kohli, though, as the prolific skipper raced to a 16th Test century, which he celebrated after whipping Mehedi for four off his 130th ball.

Ajinkya Rahane (45 not out) – in for Karun Nair – and Kohli, who hit 12 boundaries, had put on 122 when stumps were called on a one-sided opening day.
