Australia begins road to redemption against Ireland
Ireland host Australia in Belfast, with the tourists looking to rebuild the country's reputation following an Ashes defeat.
Australia will begin their all-too-familiar path to redemption in England, when they take on Ireland in a one-off one-day international (ODI) against Ireland on Thursday.
The tourists' first ODI outing since winning the Cricket World Cup in March will see them take to the field against the Irish in Belfast.
Despite being a vastly different line-up to the Test outfit, the Australians have made a habit of bouncing back from Ashes defeats in England - winning the seven-match ODI series against England 6-1 in 2009 after a 2-1 Test loss, and edging them 2-1 after a 3-0 Ashes reverse in 2013.
Their forthcoming five-match ODI series against the English will serve as Steve Smith's first mission as full-time captain, but first they must handle the threat of Ireland - whose confidence in the format is at a high point.
The Irish were unlucky not to make the World Cup quarter-finals earlier this year, earning wins over West Indies, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe.
William Porterfield's side have played just one 50-over match since - a no-result against England, after the Irish top order had crumbled to 56-4 before rain washed out play in Dublin.
Northern Ireland's capital hosts the Australians for the second time in as many meetings between the two teams, and coincidentally, it was rain that spared Ireland last time out against the powerhouse - with the hosts 36-3 in the 11th over before weather intervened in June 2012.
Granted, things have changed for the Irish since their World Cup trip - with a new coach in John Bracewell, and the retirement of Alex Cusack.
Paceman Cusack called time on his career earlier in August, while New Zealander Bracewell replaced the departed Phil Simmons in April.
The one-off match will see the Australian selectors hand a maiden cap to Joe Burns in place of injured opener Aaron Finch, and another debutant Marcus Stoinis is in the mix if the tourists opt to rest fellow all-rounder Mitch Marsh.
