Souza shocked in Sweden as Paire goes through
There was a surprise in the first round of the Swedish Open as Joao Souza suffered defeat to Christian Lindell.
Joao Souza lost to a player ranked 89 places below him in the first round of the Swedish Open as Christian Lindell claimed a three-set triumph.
Lindell prevailed 6-2 3-6 6-4 on the clay at his home tournament in Bastad after one hour and 55 minutes.
The Swede had spurned a chance to serve the match out as Souza broke to put the deciding set back on level terms. However, the Brazilian world number 88 gave the break straight back to love, handing Lindell victory.
But Lindell's compatriot Markus Ericsson could replicate the feat as he went down 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to Benoit Paire.
Paire needed just one hour and nine minutes to progress to the second round, where he will meet top seed David Goffin.
