Spain, Turkey advance to EuroBasket knockout stages
The last 16 is set at EuroBasket, with Spain and Turkey scraping through on the final day of group matches.
Spain and Turkey qualified out of EuroBasket's Group B in thrilling fashion on Thursday, with narrow victories seeing them into the round of 16.
Ergin Ataman's Turkey were already assured of progression after Spain edged Germany 77-76 earlier in the night in Berlin, but the Turks made hard work of their 111-102 overtime victory over Iceland.
Leading by nine points early in the final quarter, Turkey were set to finish with a strong win over strugglers Iceland - but the latter surged late, and tied the game up with one second on the clock via Logi Gunnarsson's three.
Ali Muhammed, who finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds, missed a lay-up shot to win in regulation, but the Turks were dominant in the extra period - outscoring Iceland 20-11, with Sinan Guler stepping up with seven points.
Cedi Osman (22 point, six assists) also impressed, with Turkey to take on defending champions France for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Serbia topped Group B, unbeaten in five matches after a 101-82 win over Italy, while Spain's one-point victory denied the Germans progression - and sealed second place.
For the second time in as many days, Dennis Schroder missed a shot late for Germany - this time, a free-throw mistake with the chance to level the scores in the final three seconds.
The Serbs take on Finland next, while Italy face Israel.
France thrashed Israel 86-61 to advance undefeated in Montpellier, the latter still finishing in second spot in Group A despite the heavy loss.
Poland's 78-65 win over Finland saw them leapfrog their opponents into third.
Greece joined Serbia and France as those with unblemished records, sealing top spot in Group C in Zagreb with a 68-65 triumph over Netherlands.
The Dutch and Macedonia failed to qualify out of the group, with Croatia second despite a 71-58 loss to Georgia.
Slovenia were third courtesy of their 62-51 success over the Macedonians.
In Riga, Lithuania needed overtime to edge the Czech Republic 85-81 and seal Group D's top spot, while Latvia earned second spot with a 75-64 result over Estonia.
Belgium were fourth after a 79-71 win against Ukraine.
Other knockout match-ups will see Latvia and Slovenia do battle, two-time champions Spain take on Poland, while Greece are up against Belgium.
Finalists in 2013, Lithuania face Georgia next, and Croatia - semi-finalists two years ago - take on the Czechs for a spot in the last eight.
