Almoez Ali - Qatar has to be humble to build on Asian Cup glory
Qatar hero Almoez Ali believes that Asian Cup glory is just the start for current crop of Maroons youngsters
Goalscoring hero Almoez Ali has insisted that Qatar must not rest following their Asian Cup triumph insisting that his side must stay humble to build on this sucess.
Ali was the breakout star of the 2019 tournament, with the 22-year-old Al Duhail attacker winning both the top scorer and MVP awards for his heroics in front of goal for Qatar. His haul of nine goals also bettered Ali Daei's record of eight for the most goals in a single Asian Cup tournament.
Speaking upon his arrival in Doha, Ali insisted that this was just the beginning for this crop of young stars.
"40 years, Qatari people did not celebrate now we celebrate for the next four years and we will not stop on that, we are looking to the future."
Speaking about his team-mates, Ali suggested that it was the team mentality and togetherness of the squad which pushed them over the line to lift their first major international trophy.
"What distinguishes this team is that we are one heart and one hand. I mean, we used to play as fighters in the UAE and we fought in every ball with great concentration and we achieved the big win."
"I am happy and proud to make the Qatari people happy with my goals and winning the cup" added Ali, who joined the rest of the squad on an open-top bus parade through the streets of Doha to celebrate the success on Saturday evening.
Ali also called for the side to remain humble and copy the likes of two Egyptian greats in order to maintain focus on the challenges ahead. "We have to be humble like Abu Trika and Mohammed Salah who are great Arab players"
Speaking of his record-breaking nine-goal haul, which was sealed with a sensational overhead kick in the final 3-1 win over Japan, Ali added that following the 1-0 Quarter-final win over South Korea he started thinking about the record.
"I did not expect to break the record with nine goals but after the Korea match, I began to think about it, and thankfully the squad helped me in achieving this goal."
Looking to the future, and Ali has already eyed his next piece of silverware with Qatar."The Gulf Cup is in December, and God willing we will win the cup."
