Italy Trembles: Gattuso’s Squad Suffers Two Major Blows Before Decisive Matches
The Italian National Team faces two key absences ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Moldova and Norway, in their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup.
Cambiaghi and Kean ruled out ahead of crucial qualifiers
Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy faces yet another setback at the worst possible time. Just days before their decisive fixtures in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the coach has lost two attacking options: Nicolò Cambiaghi and Moise Kean.
The Bologna forward suffered a right calf injury that will prevent him from taking part in the final two matches of the qualifying campaign.
“Nicolò Cambiaghi has sustained discomfort in his right calf and will not be available for the next two games. He will return to his club. At this stage, no replacement will be called up,” the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said in an official statement.
Meanwhile, Kean, a regular starter for Fiorentina, is also unavailable due to a tibia issue. His absence further complicates Gattuso’s plans, especially considering that Cambiaghi had been added to the squad as Kean’s emergency replacement just days ago.

Retegui and Raspadori to lead the attack
With both forwards ruled out, Gattuso is expected to rely on Mateo Retegui (from Al-Qadsiah) and Giacomo Raspadori (of Atlético de Madrid) to lead the offensive line. The duo will be tasked with revitalizing an attack that has struggled to find consistency in recent matches.
Italy, absent from the World Cup since Brazil 2014, finds itself in a delicate position. While the Azzurri are guaranteed at least a playoff spot, they still have a slim chance to qualify directly — provided they win their final two matches, overturn a large goal difference, and hope for a Norway slip-up.
Their first test comes on November 13 in Chisinau, against Moldova, followed by a decisive clash at the San Siro Stadium in Milan against Erling Haaland’s Norway.
The challenge is monumental, but Gattuso remains confident that his team’s grit and experience can keep Italy’s dream of returning to the World Cup alive after more than a decade.
