Raphinha Could Be Suspended by UEFA
The Barcelona were eliminated at the Metropolitano in Madrid by Atlético de Madrid, and as often happens in matches like this, controversy quickly followed. One of the main figures after the game was the Blaugrana captain, Raphinha, whose statements have sparked noise even at a disciplinary level.
Statements That Sparked Controversy
The Brazilian forward held nothing back and described the match as a “robbery.” He also questioned the refereeing criteria, stating he did not understand how Atlético de Madrid did not receive a single yellow card despite the number of fouls committed. His words became even more forceful when he added: “I want to understand the fear of letting Barcelona advance.”
These kinds of statements could lead to a sanction from UEFA, as they may violate Article 11 of its Disciplinary Code, which punishes insulting conduct or comments that discredit football or the organization itself.
Possible Sanction and Precedents
The potential punishment could reach up to a three-match suspension, to be served in the next edition of the Champions League. In the context of the tournament’s new format, such an absence would represent a significant blow for Barcelona, which is aiming to win the title again after more than a decade.
There is a recent precedent: Neymar was handed a three-match ban after making similar statements following PSG’s elimination against Manchester United. The sanction was later reduced to two matches after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Post-Match Tension
Beyond his comments, Raphinha was also involved in a tense moment with Atlético de Madrid supporters after the match, to whom he directed a provocation. The Brazilian later apologized on social media, stating that his reaction does not represent his values and was the result of provocation from some fans.
The captain’s frustration was evident. The elimination hurt, and his emotions carried over into his statements. However, those words could bring significant consequences for both him and the team.
For Barcelona, the situation represents an additional problem in the midst of a difficult moment. The team is still processing a painful elimination and could now lose one of its most important players for the start of the next European campaign.
