Federico Valverde delivers historic hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League
A magical European night unfolded at the Bernabéu. In just a few minutes, a Real Madrid midfielder turned the match into a historic performance.
A magical night at the Santiago Bernabéu
Real Madrid experienced one of those unforgettable European nights at the Santiago Bernabéu. In the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, the Spanish giants defeated Manchester City 3-0 thanks to a spectacular performance from Federico Valverde.
The Uruguayan midfielder stole the spotlight by scoring three goals in just 22 minutes, a devastating burst that completely overwhelmed the side managed by Pep Guardiola. Beyond the result itself, his performance turned the match into one of the most remarkable individual displays of the season.
A more attacking version of Valverde
Since Álvaro Arbeloa took charge of Real Madrid, Valverde’s role within the team has evolved noticeably. The coach has encouraged the Uruguayan to take on a more aggressive attacking role, allowing him to push forward more frequently and become involved near the opponent’s penalty area.
Valverde himself hinted at that possibility before the match. Ahead of the clash with Manchester City, he said he was willing to play in more advanced positions if the team needed it, a statement that ultimately became reality on the pitch.
Three goals in 22 minutes to make history
The first goal arrived around the 20th minute, when Valverde capitalized on a defensive mistake by Manchester City following a long pass from Thibaut Courtois. The Uruguayan controlled the ball calmly, rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and finished with composure to open the scoring.
Only seven minutes later he struck again. This time the midfielder surprised everyone with a powerful left-footed shot from distance, doubling Real Madrid’s advantage and confirming that he was enjoying a truly extraordinary night.
A stunning strike to complete the hat-trick
The third goal was perhaps the most spectacular moment of the evening. After receiving a pass from Brahim Díaz, Valverde used a delicate touch to evade the challenge of Marc Guéhi before unleashing a thunderous volley that once again beat Donnarumma.
With that strike, the Real Madrid captain completed the first hat-trick of his professional career, sending the Bernabéu into celebration and sealing a performance that will be remembered for years.
Joining an elite Champions League club
Thanks to his incredible display, Federico Valverde joined a very exclusive group of players who have scored a hat-trick in the first half of a Champions League knockout match.
Among the names in that elite group are legends such as Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland, and Anthony Gordon, all of whom produced memorable nights in Europe’s most prestigious competition.
Valverde also became only the second midfielder in Real Madrid history to score three goals in a Champions League match, a feat not seen since Pirri in 1968, further highlighting the historical significance of his performance.
