Chivu hopeful De Vrij will be fit for World Cup
Inter fought back to earn a 3-3 draw with Bologna in their final Serie A game, but Stefan de Vrij may have sustained an untimely injury.
Cristian Chivu is hopeful Stefan de Vrij's injury is not too serious and that he will be able to make it to the World Cup.
Inter had to come from behind to salvage a late 3-3 draw with Bologna, ensuring they would not end their Scudetto-winning campaign on the back of a loss.
After Federico Dimarco had put the Serie A champions ahead, Federico Bernardeschi and Tommaso Pobega flipped the script before a Piotr Zielinski own goal appeared to put Bologna out of sight.
However, Francesco Pio Esposito and Andy Diouf earned Inter a point, with the latter scoring in the 86th minute to level the score.
But there was a worrying moment late on as De Vrij pulled up clutching his thigh before limping off the pitch with the World Cup looming.
Ronald Koeman is set to name his Netherlands squad on Monday, and Chivu admitted he is not yet sure of the extent of De Vrij's injury.
"We hope it is nothing too serious and that he can recover in time for the World Cup, because he deserves to play in that tournament," Chivu told DAZN Italia.
Inter won the double this season, also clinching the Coppa Italia to add to their Scudetto success, marking an impressive debut campaign for Chivu.
The Nerazzurri scored 89 goals this season, the same number as in their previous two Scudetto-winning seasons (89 in 2020-21 and 2023-24).
Pio Esposito scored seven of those, becoming the third Inter player in the three-point-for-a-win era (since 1994-95) to score more than six goals in a Serie A season before turning 21, after Mario Balotelli (eight in 2008-09, nine in 2009-10) and Obafemi Martins (seven in 2003-04, 11 in 2004-05).
"We must always honour the shirt, and the lads again gave their best, putting themselves at the disposal of the team," Chivu added.
"The substitutes also showed their quality, so I am pleased for [Matteo] Cocchi, [Luka] Topalovic and Diouf, along with Pio scoring his 10th goal of the season.
"These are all good players who deserve to play for Inter. We're giving them the chance to taste Serie A football and help them grow. This is not an easy league to play in.
"This is a team with a lot of guarantees, so rather than lose those, what we want to do is add a little more on top.
"Josep Martinez and Diouf can be part of this squad, to develop quality and ambition. Last season we went into the Club World Cup to honour our obligations, but nine months later we have two trophies and need a nice vacation."
