West Ham Relegated From Premier League as the Dockers Derby Returns After 14 Years
The Fall of the Hammers
Disaster has officially struck London. West Ham United were officially relegated to the Championship after Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 victory over Everton, a result that ultimately condemned the Hammers while saving Spurs from a disastrous outcome.
After 14 consecutive seasons in the Premier League, West Ham will return to England’s second division for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign.
The arrival of Nuno Espírito Santo was not enough to rescue a team that never found stability throughout the season. The Hammers managed to win only nine matches during the entire campaign and paid the price for a three-game losing streak at the worst possible moment. They still controlled their own destiny in the relegation battle, but the finish to the season was catastrophic.
What hurts supporters the most is that just a few years ago the outlook was completely different. During the 2022/23 season, West Ham lifted the UEFA Conference League trophy, securing a historic European title for the club. Afterward, they reached the Europa League quarterfinals and finished ninth in the Premier League, but poor sporting decisions eventually began to take their toll.
The 2024/25 season had already served as a warning sign after the club finished 14th in the table. However, nobody imagined that just two years later the team would end up being relegated.
The Historic Dockers Derby Returns
While frustration takes over at West Ham, there is one club celebrating the news: Millwall. Their biggest rival will once again meet them in the Championship, bringing back the historic Dockers Derby after 14 years away.
The last meeting between the two clubs took place on February 4, 2012, when West Ham defeated Millwall 2-1 in the 99th edition of one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.
The East London Derby is widely considered one of the hottest and most traditional rivalries in world football. The two sides have faced each other 99 times, with Millwall leading the all-time series with 38 victories. Match No. 100 will take place next season, and anticipation is already building.
One of England’s Fiercest Rivalries
The rivalry is so historic that it even inspired films such as “Green Street” and “The Firm,” productions that showcase the tension, hooligan culture, and sporting hatred shared between both fan bases.
While supporters at West Ham mourn relegation, fans at Millwall are already eagerly awaiting the return of their eternal rival.
