Tottenham have confirmed Mohammed Kudus has suffered a setback in his return from injury and could require surgery.

The winger has not played since January 4 after picking up a significant quad injury against Sunderland, who Spurs face again on Sunday.

Kudus, who joined from West Ham last summer, has scored two goals and provided five assists in 19 Premier League appearances for Spurs this season.

The north London side have endured many injury problems this term, leaving them 17th in the league and on the brink of relegation.

Spurs released a statement that read: "We can confirm that Mohammed Kudus has suffered a setback in his return from injury.

"He had returned to team training during the past week, however will now require further specialist review and, potentially, surgery."

Sunday's clash against Sunderland will be new hire Roberto De Zerbi's first game in charge of Spurs.

Only one of the last 10 Tottenham managers have lost their first Premier League game in charge of the club (W6 D3), however that was Igor Tudor (1-4 vs Arsenal in February).

Meanwhile, De Zerbi has won his first league game at three of the last four clubs he’s been in charge of (Sassuolo, Shakhtar Donetsk and Marseille) with the only exception coming in the Premier League with Brighton (3-3 v Liverpool).
