Liverpol Immortalizes Diogo Jota With This Tribute Within Its Current Squad.
Diogo Jota, the Portuguese footballer who tragically passed away a few weeks ago in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother André Silva, continues to be honored by Liverpool FC. In a deeply symbolic gesture, the Reds have included him in their official squad for the 2025–26 season, as a lasting tribute to his memory.
A special tribute for the Portuguese forward
On the club's official website, players are listed by position — goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Jota, however, was not placed in the forwards section. Instead, a new category was created under the title “Forever”, dedicated solely to him.
Words from manager Arne Slot
Jota's player profile includes a reminder of the fatal accident, and it also confirms that his number 20 shirt has been retired across all Liverpool teams as part of the posthumous tribute. Head coach Arne Slot shared heartfelt words in his memory:
“We will always carry him with us — in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go. Maybe especially in the difficult moments. But at all times, while we are here, we will carry him in our thoughts and in our hearts.”
Number 20 retired forever
Liverpool has officially announced that Diogo Jota’s No. 20 shirt will be retired, not only in the men’s first team, but also in LFC Women and the Academy. The club stated:
“After consultation with his wife, Rute, and his family, the club can confirm that the squad number will be retired in Diogo’s honor and memory at all levels, including LFC Women and the Academy.”
This touching gesture cements Jota’s legacy at Anfield not only for his footballing talent but also for his character and the bond he built with supporters.
A legacy that will live on
Undoubtedly, this is a moving tribute from Liverpool to a player who left a lasting mark both on and off the pitch. And as the Reds' faithful always say: "You’ll never walk alone."
Diogo Jota will never walk alone.
