Mats Wieffer proved to be an unlikely hero for Brighton as his brace helped Fabian Hurzeler's side to a 2-0 win over struggling Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday. 

Wieffer netted at the end of either half to help the Seagulls keep pace with those above them in the European hunt, while pushing Burnley closer to relegation. 

Danny Welbeck missed an early chance to put Brighton ahead when he scuffed his effort into Martin Dubravka's hands after being found by Yankuba Minteh at the back post. 

Burnley had the ball in the back of the net less than a minute later through Jaidon Anthony, but his pinpoint finish into the bottom-right corner was ruled out for an offside against him after he was picked out by Lesley Ugochukwu's clever pass. 

But Brighton made their dominance count in the 43rd minute as Pascal Gross' cross was thundered in first time by Wieffer, for his first Premier League goal of the season. 

Scott Parker's side improved after the break, and they were once again denied by the offside flag, this time when Bashir Humphreys' shot from close range was ruled out after James Ward-Prowse's dangerous free-kick was parried into his path. 

The hosts continued to push for an equaliser as Zian Flemming was twice denied by Bart Verbruggen, but their wastefulness was punished when Wieffer's 89th-minute attempt from the edge of the box whistled into the bottom-left corner.

The international break perhaps came at the wrong time for Brighton after back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Liverpool, but another victory here saw them put together three consecutive Premier League wins for the first time since January 2023. 

The result also saw them complete a Premier League double over Burnley for the first time, but they were indebted to Wieffer's brilliant double.

On what was his 47th top-flight appearance, the Dutchman netted his second and third goals in the Premier League, with his previous strike coming against West Ham in December 2024. 

Brighton have also won three consecutive Premier League away games for the first time since January 2023, while it is also the first time they have kept three consecutive clean sheets on the road since July 2020, and they were worthy of their win here. 

Hurzeler's side finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.91 from 13 shots, compared to Burnley's 0.9 from 10 attempts. The Clarets have won just one of their last 23 Premier League games (D7 L15) and are winless in their last 12 at Turf Moor (D4 L8).
