Eddie Howe was able to celebrate a magnificent birthday victory as he revelled in Newcastle United's hammering of Everton.

Newcastle cruised to a 4-1 triumph at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, picking up their first away win of their Premier League campaign.

Malick Thiaw scored the quickest goal in the competition this season to get the ball rolling after just 55 seconds, with Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade putting Newcastle in complete control before half-time.

Thiaw grabbed his second in the second half, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall netting a consolation for Everton as Newcastle claimed their biggest away win against a non-promoted side in the Premier League since April 2023, which was also a 4-1 victory against the Toffees.

Newcastle's triumph was the perfect present for Howe, who celebrated turning 48 in style.

"Yeah, a perfect way to celebrate the birthday," he said.

"I was saying earlier I’ve had birthdays where we haven’t got a good result, and trust me, they aren’t the birthdays you want.

"Massive win for us, we needed it. And we finally won away from home, which is a great feeling.

"We tweaked things tactically, and we have been doing that regularly to try and find a formula. Sometimes it’s not necessarily that. It’s the players, the ones that go on the pitch, that are able to execute and play well and I thought they did it.

"Lots of details we’ve got right, obviously set plays are important and we were on the right side of that today, which was really pleasing to see, and a good feel about the team."

Thiaw's opener for Newcastle was the earliest home goal Everton have conceded in the Premier League (52 seconds) since August 2014, with Diego Costa netting after 35 seconds for Chelsea.

The German is the first player to score his maiden Premier League goal in the opening minute of a match since Kenedy for Chelsea against Norwich in March 2016.

And he is the first Newcastle player to score headed goals in a single Premier League match since Georginio Wijnaldum against Norwich in October 2015. 

Thiaw told Sky Sports: "I’m grateful, it is an incredible moment for me. The Newcastle fans have welcomed me like it is my new home so I am really grateful.

"I feel amazing. I'm really grateful for everything that is happening to me right now. I'm just trying to stay grounded as well, but also take the positive of it. I'm just thankful for all the stuff, all the players, all the fans, that they welcome me like this, so it's amazing."

Miley turned in an impressive display in midfield, with the youngster whipping in the corner from which Thiaw opened the scoring, before netting himself when a first-time strike led to a blunder from Jordan Pickford.

Aged 19 years and 212 days, Lewis Miley became the second-youngest player to both score and assist in the same Premier League match for Newcastle, after Charles N’Zogbia against Blackburn in September 2005 (19 years and 113 days).

"Very strong from Lewis, and I think sometimes you have to single players out when they deserve special credit," Howe said of Miley.

"Lewis is someone who’s so young, but just plays with such maturity, which belies his years. I think his technical delivery today was so strong, but also off the ball, winning a lot of second balls for us in that key midfield area. He assisted a goal, scored a goal. Great, great sort of game for him to look back on and reflect on and take a lot."
