Mascherano Compares Lionel Messi to Michael Jordan and Rafael Nadal
The Inter Miami coach praised the Argentine star after another outstanding performance in MLS.
Messi, a Legend Beyond Soccer
Javier Mascherano, head coach of Inter Miami, emphasized on Saturday that the admiration for Lionel Messi is not just about his extraordinary football skills, but because he is one of those rare athletes who "transcend sports." After Inter Miami’s dominant 5–1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, the Argentine coach drew a powerful comparison between Messi and global icons like Michael Jordan and Rafael Nadal.
“In the end, I think anyone who’s a fan of sports, not just soccer, admires these kinds of athletes — whether it’s Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, or Rafa Nadal,” said Mascherano during the post-match press conference. “They’re people who go beyond sports, and the truth is we’re very privileged to experience this up close.”
Messi Shines Again With a Brace and an Assist
The comparison didn’t come out of nowhere. Earlier that evening, Messi once again led Inter Miami to a massive win with two goals and an assist, thrilling the crowd in New Jersey. The Argentine star is on fire: he has scored 12 goals in his last 7 league matches, including six braces, and now boasts 18 goals in 18 appearances during the current MLS season.
Against the New York Red Bulls, Messi assisted Jordi Alba for the equalizer and then added two more goals in the second half. Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia also contributed a brace, rounding out a stellar performance for the Florida-based team.
Messi’s performances continue to reaffirm not only his elite status on the pitch but also his influence as a cultural icon. As Mascherano pointed out, his impact stretches far beyond the soccer field — inspiring fans across various sports and generations.
With this form, Messi’s journey in the United States is just beginning, and each match adds another chapter to his historic legacy.
