What Is Happening With Kylian Mbappé and How Long Will He Be Out?
The French forward has been dealing with discomfort since December and is prioritizing a full recovery ahead of the season’s decisive moments.
Concern is growing around Real Madrid as Kylian Mbappé has been left out of the squad for the crucial Champions League clash against Benfica due to persistent discomfort in his left knee — an issue that could sideline him longer than initially expected.
The French star has played in recent weeks far from his best physical condition. Although he tried to push through the pain, both the medical staff and the player decided it was time to stop and avoid worsening the injury, especially with the World Cup next summer on the horizon.
A knee that won’t fully recover
Since December, Mbappé has been dealing with inflammation in a ligament in his left knee. While the club has not released an official medical report, it is known that he has missed several training sessions and already sat out key matches.
He completed 90 minutes against Osasuna and also against Benfica in Lisbon, but his performances clearly showed physical limitations. Prior to that, he did not feature at all against Real Sociedad. According to sources close to the club, the French forward has been operating at only 60–70% of his full capacity.
Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa publicly praised Mbappé’s commitment, highlighting his willingness to help the team even when not fully fit. However, the final decision was clear: mandatory rest until the discomfort subsides completely.
How long will he be sidelined?
In the worst-case scenario, Mbappé could be out for up to three weeks. That would likely rule him out against Getafe and make him a serious doubt for the match against Celta de Vigo at Balaídos.
The primary objective is to have him fully fit for a potential Champions League Round of 16 tie, where Real Madrid would need their biggest star at his best. Additionally, the player has the 2026 World Cup firmly in mind and does not want to risk a relapse that could jeopardize his participation.
A Madrid side plagued by absences
Kylian Mbappé’s absence is not the only concern. Álvaro Arbeloa is also without Dean Huijsen, Jude Bellingham, Éder Militão, Dani Ceballos, and Rodrygo Goes, the latter suspended in the Champions League.
