The Barcelona Demand That Collapsed Nico Williams’ Transfer and May Have Sparked Fury From His Entourage
The potential transfer of Nico Williams to FC Barcelona seemed on track following the conclusion of the 2024–25 season. However, an unexpected demand from the Catalan club reportedly derailed the negotiations and triggered anger within the player’s camp. In the end, Williams chose to remain at Athletic Club, signing a contract extension until 2035.

Everything pointed to Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, having advanced talks with Félix Tainta, Williams’ agent. But according to AS, negotiations stalled when the Blaugrana began to suspect the agent was also in discussions with Athletic Club about a new and improved contract.

One Barça executive reacted bluntly: he reportedly contacted Nico directly and urged him to replace his agent, suggesting high-profile names like Jorge Mendes or Pini Zahavi instead. This direct interference, seen as an intrusion into the player’s personal affairs, deeply upset his family—ultimately leading the Spanish international to reject the Catalan club.
Away from the Barcelona drama, Nico found strong backing at the club that raised him. Athletic Club not only offered him a new 10-year contract running through June 2035, but also raised his release clause by more than 50%, now reportedly close to €90 million. The deal was signed at San Mamés in the presence of his mother María Arthuer, his brother and team captain Iñaki Williams, and club officials.
“We have very ambitious goals like the Champions League, and what better way to pursue them than with the club of my life,” said Nico after signing. His comments made clear not only his emotional connection to the Basque side but also his firm stance against those trying to dictate his professional path.
With this commitment, Athletic Club secures one of Europe’s most coveted young talents, while Barcelona is left to reassess its transfer strategy after missing out on one of its top summer targets.
