Sixth Defeat Piles Pressure on Arbeloa After Bayern Loss
Álvaro Arbeloa is under growing pressure after suffering his sixth defeat in charge of Real Madrid, matching a poor start previously seen under Xabi Alonso.
Pressure continues to mount on Álvaro Arbeloa after Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. The result leaves Madrid facing a daunting challenge ahead of the return leg in Munich, where they must win by at least two goals to keep their dream of a 16th European title alive.
A worrying trend
The loss marks Arbeloa’s sixth defeat in just 19 matches in charge across all competitions, alongside 13 victories and no draws since taking over in January. The numbers mirror a similarly poor start once recorded by Xabi Alonso, raising concerns about the team’s direction under the current coach.
Prior to the Bayern defeat, Madrid had already fallen to Albacete Balompié in the Copa del Rey, SL Benfica in the Champions League, and CA Osasuna, Getafe CF and RCD Mallorca in La Liga.
Season slipping away
Real Madrid now appear to be heading toward a trophyless season. They have already been eliminated from the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, while trailing FC Barcelona by seven points in La Liga.
The defeat against Bayern has further complicated their European ambitions, leaving them on the brink of elimination from the Champions League unless they produce a major comeback in Germany.
