Real Madrid Masks: What They Are and Why Pintus Has Started Wearing Them Again
Real Madrid returned to training this Wednesday after two days off, and they did so with a key figure taking control at Valdebebas: Antonio Pintus. The Italian fitness coach has now fully assumed command of the squad’s physical preparation, signaling the start of a phase of maximum intensity.
His return has not gone unnoticed. Along with Pintus, one of the most striking — and debated — elements of his methods has also made a comeback: the famous training masks that once again spark curiosity among Real Madrid fans.
But what exactly are these masks used for?
Pintus has spent years perfecting these hypoxia masks, designed to simulate high-altitude training and increase players’ physical demands. The goal is clear: to individualize workloads, improve endurance, and optimize each player’s physical performance.
The masks are worn over the mouth and nose, forcing players to breathe through special filters. They feature three interchangeable valves — two for air intake and one for release — which regulate the amount of oxygen entering the body.
Thanks to this system, the masks can simulate altitudes ranging from 910 to 5,500 meters above sea level, pushing the body to an effort similar to high-mountain training conditions.
After each session, Pintus analyzes individual player data and adjusts the physical program on a personalized basis — a methodology that has already proven crucial in previous Real Madrid eras to ensure peak condition at decisive moments of the season.
