Lamine Yamal, one of the brightest young stars of FC Barcelona, sparked debate among fans after posting a photo with Joan Laporta on social media just a day before the club’s presidential elections.
Barcelona faces a crucial weekend both on and off the pitch. While the team prepares to host Sevilla FC at Camp Nou on Sunday, club members will also head to the polls to decide who will lead the institution as president.
In the midst of the election buildup, Yamal uploaded a photo on his Instagram account in which he appears alongside Laporta. In the image, both are smiling while posing with a Barcelona scarf and a scale model of Camp Nou in front of them. The post quickly drew attention and has been widely interpreted by supporters as a sign of the player’s support for Laporta’s candidacy.
The race for the presidency has mainly come down to Laporta and businessman Víctor Font, who has also been campaigning intensely in an effort to convince club members that his project represents the best path forward for the Catalan giants.
The campaign officially concluded on Friday with the final speeches from both candidates. Laporta delivered an emotional address to supporters and finished his remarks visibly moved as the crowd applauded and chanted “president, president.”
Meanwhile, Font closed his campaign by criticizing his rival’s past leadership while arguing that Barcelona needs a new direction and a different vision for the future. With an important match ahead and the club’s leadership at stake, Barcelona enters a decisive weekend where both the result on the field and the vote of the members could shape the club’s immediate future.
