OFFICIAL! Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to Visit Mexico for Azteca Reopening
The Mexico National Team will host Portugal at the newly renovated Estadio Azteca, with potential participation from Cristiano Ronaldo as the headline attraction for the March international window.
The Mexico National Team has confirmed two top-level friendly matches for the March FIFA window, facing European powerhouses Portugal and Belgium, rivals who are also preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held across Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Azteca Returns to Glory… with Cristiano in the Spotlight
In an official statement, the sporting leadership of the national side —managed by Javier Aguirre— announced that on Saturday, March 28, Mexico will host Portugal at the Estadio Azteca. The match carries huge anticipation given the possible presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, a global icon and massive draw for fans in Mexico.
The occasion is historic: it will mark the reopening of the revamped Coloso de Santa Úrsula, which will serve as the venue for the World Cup’s opening match on June 11. Mexico currently sits 15th in the FIFA rankings, while the Portuguese national team occupies sixth place.
Belgium, Another Major Test
The schedule remains demanding. On Tuesday, March 31, the Tri will travel to Chicago to face Belgium at Soldier Field —currently ranked eighth in the world and featuring elite-level stars.
Following a difficult end to the year —with four draws and losses against Colombia (4–0) and Paraguay (2–1)— Aguirre will look for improved performances against rivals of the highest level. Weeks ago, the “Vasco” acknowledged that “there are players who want to succeed, but don’t have enough,” highlighting the urgency for growth and competitiveness within the squad.
Mexico and the Road Toward the 2026 World Cup
The minimum objective for the Tri is to reach the Round of 16 —something they failed to achieve in Qatar, where the team exited in the group stage. To advance, Mexico must raise its footballing level and consolidate a reliable core of key players.
Mexico will be part of Group A and will debut on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca against an opponent that will be determined this Friday during the World Cup draw. Their second match will be on June 18 in Guadalajara, and they’ll finish the group phase on June 24 in Mexico City.
With the Azteca renewed, fan support rising, and the possibility of witnessing Cristiano Ronaldo in action —the anticipation is already electric.
