World Cup in Doubt: Iran Faces Key Talks
Iran’s place at the 2026 World Cup will be decided in a key summit in Zurich.
The participation of Iran in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is hanging in the balance. FIFA has scheduled a crucial meeting in Zurich with Iranian football officials to determine whether the team will be able to compete in the United States.
Iranian FA president Mehdi Taj stated: “We have many issues to discuss.” The meeting is expected to take place before May 20, just weeks before the tournament begins.
The main concern revolves around matches scheduled on U.S. soil, where Iran is set to face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in the group stage. A potential knockout clash against United States would further intensify the situation.
Geopolitical tensions have raised uncertainty about Iran’s participation, while the domestic league remains suspended and the national team continues preparations abroad.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reiterated that Iran will participate as planned. U.S. president Donald Trump also expressed support for that stance.
However, recent issues involving the Iranian delegation in Canada highlight the diplomatic challenges surrounding the team. The upcoming meeting could ultimately decide Iran’s fate at the 2026 World Cup.
