The Curious Opponents of Argentina
The reigning world champions, Argentina, were very close to being left without preparation rivals ahead of the defense of their title. In the end, it was confirmed they will face Mauritania on March 27 and Zambia on March 31.
Planning Problems
The announcement puts an end, at least for now, to several of the speculations surrounding Argentina. Initially, one of the friendlies was scheduled against Guatemala, but the Central American side will play in Italy on March 27, and FIFA does not allow a national team to play matches on different continents within the same international window.
On top of that, the Finalissima was canceled, and a friendly against Qatar also fell through, leaving the team coached by Lionel Scaloni without preparation matches ahead of the World Cup. Facing that scenario, the Argentine FA acted quickly and managed to secure two games that, while not the most attractive on paper, will help the coaching staff fine-tune details and sharpen the squad before the tournament.
Unexpected but Necessary Opponents
Mauritania sits at 115th in the FIFA rankings, while Zambia is ranked 91st. Both teams will travel to Buenos Aires to play these preparation matches, taking advantage of having no other international commitments during this FIFA window.
The Argentine federation had to move fast, as there was a real risk of arriving without match rhythm ahead of their clash against Algeria, scheduled for June 16 in Kansas, already part of the World Cup calendar. There were even attempts to have Guatemala travel from Italy to Argentina to keep the match, but logistical issues ultimately made it impossible.

The Presence of Lionel Messi
There is still one more international window before the World Cup, although Argentina currently has no friendlies scheduled for that date. That is why having at least these two matches is important for tournament planning and for Lionel Scaloni to test variations, give minutes to certain players, and arrive in better form for the big stage.
Additionally, there is another factor that makes this doubleheader special: Lionel Messi will travel and be available for both matches, which will be played at La Bombonera. Everything suggests these could be among his final matches with the national team on Argentine soil, adding even greater emotional value to the occasion.
