Klinsmann Slams Serie A: “Lamine Yamal Would Play in the Second Division”
Jürgen Klinsmann questions Italian football’s structure, claiming talents like Lamine Yamal would be forced to develop in lower divisions.
The crisis surrounding Italian football following its failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup continues to draw criticism, with Jürgen Klinsmann now targeting the structural issues within Serie A.
Italy’s third consecutive absence from the World Cup has sparked widespread concern and prompted deeper analysis of the country’s football system. For Klinsmann, who spent several years playing for Inter Milan, the problem goes far beyond a single generation of players.
The former German striker was particularly critical of the lack of opportunities for young talent. “Italy is paying the price for the absence of leaders, technically gifted players, and trust in youth,” he stated.
He then made a striking comparison that quickly stirred debate: “In Italy, players like Lamine Yamal or Jamal Musiala would probably be playing in Serie B to gain experience,” he said, highlighting what he sees as a flawed development pathway.
Klinsmann also pointed to a tactical mindset that he believes is holding Italian football back. According to him, many coaches still prioritize avoiding defeat rather than pushing to win. “That culture is an obstacle. Teams play with fear, and these are the results,” he added.
Despite his criticism, Klinsmann expressed sympathy for the situation, especially after Italy’s painful defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, which sealed their elimination. “I suffered a lot for my Italian friends. I even had trouble sleeping after the match,” he admitted.
His remarks underline growing concern over the direction of Italian football, which now faces a crucial period of reflection and reform if it hopes to restore its former prestige on the global stage.
