Canada Replaces Marcelo Flores With Jayden Nelson for World Cup
Canada has been forced into a late roster change ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with Marcelo Flores ruled out through injury and Jayden Nelson called up as his replacement.
Canada's men's national team announced on Tuesday that Jayden Nelson has been added to its 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, replacing Marcelo Flores, who has been ruled out due to injury.
According to the Canadian Soccer Association, Flores underwent surgery on June 5 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup final. The injury ends any hopes of the Tigres UANL attacker participating in the tournament, which Canada will host alongside the United States and Mexico.
Flores' absence is a significant setback for head coach Jesse Marsch. The young forward had become a regular member of the national team setup and offered valuable versatility across the attacking line, capable of operating both as a winger and as an attacking midfielder.
To fill the vacancy, Canada turned to Austin FC winger Jayden Nelson. The 23-year-old has been enjoying an impressive season in Major League Soccer and arrives in camp with momentum and confidence ahead of the world's biggest football tournament.
Nelson's pace, creativity and direct style could provide Canada with an important offensive weapon as the team prepares for its opening match. With expectations high on home soil, the Canadian coaching staff hopes the late addition can quickly integrate into the squad and contribute immediately.
Meanwhile, Flores now begins a lengthy rehabilitation process, aiming to return to action stronger after one of the most difficult moments of his career.
