VIDEO | Copa Sudamericana 2024 Highlights: Wanderers vs Danubio
The historic Danubio dispatched their compatriot Wanderers 1-0 to advance to the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana with an incredible free-kick from Matías Fracchia.
Fracchia was the protagonist of this story after scoring from a free-kick in the 54th minute, a shot that was impossible for the Wanderers' goalkeeper, Mauro Silveira, to control.
Danubio deployed their offense from the first minute with a shot from Manuel Monzeglio that narrowly missed the Wanderers' goalkeeper's crossbar, indicating the intentions of "la franja" team.
The Wanderers' first shot on goal came in the 22nd minute after a free-kick taken by Leandro Otormín that went over the defensive wall and was easily controlled by goalkeeper Mauro Goicoechea.
Otormín tried again in the 34th minute with a powerful shot from his right foot that Goicoechea managed to control once more.
Paraguayan referee Benítez blew the whistle for the end of the first half, which was marked by speed and rhythm from both sides but lacked efficiency in finishing.
In the 54th minute, Fracchia unleashed a missile of a free-kick from outside the Wanderers' box, finding the back of the net and giving Danubio the lead. The team was determined to secure the win.
After the goal, Wanderers' coach Alejandro Cappuccio made changes to reinforce the attack, bringing on José Alberti, Facundo Milán, and Agustín Albarracín, but they couldn't meet the coach's expectations.
With the result in hand, Danubio, led by Mario Saralegui, opted to tighten up their defense, substituting experienced forward Sebastián Fernández with Santiago Etchebarne.
Despite the adverse result, Wanderers showed signs of seeking the equalizer with corner kicks and shots on goal, but they were unsuccessful against a Danubio defense that made no mistakes.
Following this result, Danubio becomes the first Uruguayan representative to advance to the group stage, while this Thursday Racing will face Cerro Largo, also from Uruguay, with hopes of securing the second ticket and progressing.
