Sporting Cristal Earns Gritty Draw vs 2 de Mayo, Series to Be Decided in Lima
Sporting Cristal secured a valuable 2-2 draw away against 2 de Mayo in Paraguay, keeping the tie wide open in the race for a place in the third preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores. The Peruvian side played nearly an hour with ten men after Luis Iberico was sent off in the 41st minute, yet showed resilience to remain alive in the series.
The team led by Paulo Autuori took the lead in the 62nd minute. Captain Yoshimar Yotún calmly converted a penalty awarded after a foul on Argentine forward Santiago González, rewarding Cristal’s defensive discipline despite being a man down.
A Defensive Plan That Nearly Secured Victory
With ten players, Sporting Cristal adopted a compact defensive structure and relied on quick counterattacks, exploiting the spaces left by an attack-minded 2 de Mayo side pushing forward in front of its home crowd in Pedro Juan Caballero.
Coach Paulo Autuori’s strategy worked for much of the second half. The Paraguayan side controlled possession but lacked precision in the final third, while Cristal’s back line held firm under pressure.

However, the hosts’ persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Matías Cáceres headed home a powerful equalizer, reigniting the stadium and shifting momentum toward the home side.
Two Own Goals and a Dramatic Finish
The match took another unexpected turn just a minute later. 2 de Mayo moved ahead thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Brazilian defender Cristiano, who attempted to clear the ball but instead sent it into his own net.
When victory seemed secured for the hosts, fate intervened once more. In the closing minutes, a mistake by goalkeeper Ángel Martínez resulted in the equalizer, sealing a dramatic 2-2 finish.
The decisive second leg will be played Tuesday, February 24, at the Coliseo Miguel Grau in Callao, where Sporting Cristal will look to capitalize on home advantage, while 2 de Mayo aims to continue its historic continental run.
