Sporting Cristal Advance on Penalties to Stay Alive in the Libertadores
The Peruvian side held their nerve from the spot to seal qualification and keep their continental dream alive.
Sporting Cristal secured their place in the third preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores after defeating Paraguay’s 2 de Mayo in a dramatic penalty shootout. Following a hard-fought 0-0 draw at the Miguel Grau Stadium in Callao, the Peruvian side prevailed 5-4 from the spot, ending the Paraguayan club’s hopes of reaching the group stage.
The celeste squad showed composure when it mattered most, with successful penalties converted by Yoshimar Yotún, Martín Távara, Christofer Gonzáles, Juan Cruz González, and Cristiano, who ensured progression to the next round.
A high-intensity match full of chances
2 de Mayo, fresh from eliminating Alianza Lima in the previous round, started boldly and pressed early. They threatened through Diego Acosta, whose shot was blocked in time by Rafael Lutiger.
As the match progressed, Sporting Cristal gained control of possession thanks to the leadership of Yoshimar Yotún and Martín Távara. The hosts began pushing forward with attacking moves led by Brazilian striker Vizeu and Argentine winger Santiago González.
Attempts from Vizeu, González, Catriel Cabellos, Leandro Sosa, and Irven Ávila followed, but poor finishing and timely saves from goalkeeper Ángel Martínez kept the score level.
Just before halftime, González had the clearest chance in a one-on-one situation, but Martínez reacted brilliantly to tip the ball away.
Defensive resilience and late drama
The second half followed a similar pattern: Sporting Cristal dominated possession while 2 de Mayo stayed compact and looked to strike on the counterattack.

In the 63rd minute, a curling effort from Santiago González drifted just wide of the post. The Paraguayan side responded in the 75th minute when a free kick from Braian Ayala struck the crossbar with Diego Enríquez beaten.
After another close chance from Yoshimar Yotún sailed just wide, the match grew increasingly physical and congested until referee Andrés Matonte signaled the end of regulation time.
Penalty shootout seals qualification
Tension peaked during the shootout. Goalkeeper Ángel Martínez saved a penalty from Cristian Benavente, but Diego Enríquez responded by stopping the attempt from Paraguay’s Cáceres.
Although Romero, Colman, Ruiz Díaz, and Ayala converted for the visitors, Coronel fired his shot over the crossbar, sealing qualification for Sporting Cristal.
The Peruvian club will now face Venezuela’s Carabobo, who eliminated Huachipato, with their sights set on reaching the Copa Libertadores group stage and continuing their continental journey.
