The Fortune James Rodríguez Will Receive From the Spanish Tax Authorities
Colombian star James Rodríguez has received positive news off the pitch, as Spanish courts ruled in his favor and ordered the return of more than €3 million following a lengthy legal dispute with tax authorities.
A case dating back to his Real Madrid move
The origin of the case goes back to 2014, when James Rodríguez joined Real Madrid from Monaco. At the time, Spanish tax authorities questioned his fiscal situation, alleging irregularities in his tax declarations for that year.
Initially treated as a potential case of tax evasion, the situation was later reclassified as a “technical discrepancy” regarding fiscal residency criteria. Despite this, the Colombian was financially penalized while the case continued.
After several years of legal proceedings, Spain’s National Court reviewed the case and ultimately ruled in favor of the former Real Madrid player, overturning the previous decision against him.
James proves Monaco residency and wins the case
The cornerstone of James Rodríguez’s defense was proving that he spent more than 183 days in Monaco during 2014, which exempted him from being considered a Spanish tax resident for that period.
The Colombian presented official documentation confirming his stay in the principality, although it was initially dismissed by tax authorities. However, the court ultimately validated the evidence, deeming it sufficient to support his claims.
With this ruling, it was determined that no tax fraud had occurred, but rather a difference in the interpretation of tax regulations. As a result, Spanish authorities must now return more than €3 million to the player.
Currently playing for Minnesota United, James Rodríguez receives this legal backing at a time when he is looking to regain prominence on the pitch.
