Sergio Ramos Rules Out Retirement After His Spell in Mexico
At nearly 40 years old, Sergio Ramos has made it clear: he will continue his career — even if it’s away from Rayados de Monterrey.
The future of Sergio Ramos in Liga MX has been heavily discussed in recent weeks, but a major twist appears certain: the legendary Spanish defender has no intention of retiring once his contract with Rayados expires in December — even if his continuity at the club is increasingly unlikely.
Ramos Wants More Football… Even If Not in Monterrey
According to reporting from Juanfe Sanz on El Chiringuito — later backed by MARCA — the former Real Madrid icon has already made a firm decision: while his time at Monterrey may be ending, his professional career is not.
“Sergio Ramos has decided to put an end to his time at Monterrey. His objective is to lift the title during the playoffs, but he wants to start a new chapter in his sporting career and he is not planning on retiring,” said Sanz.
The 39-year-old arrived in Mexico on a one-year deal, immediately assumed the captaincy, and has been a fundamental pillar for Domènec Torrent throughout the Apertura 2025. This year, Ramos has featured in 31 matches, scoring seven goals, while establishing himself as a leader on and off the pitch.
Renewal Dispute: The Real Reason Behind His Potential Exit
Talks between the captain and Rayados’ sporting director José Antonio “Tato” Noriega have taken place, but the main issue is the contract duration.
Reports suggest Rayados want to extend Ramos for six months — or one year with a mid-term review. Ramos, however, is demanding one fully guaranteed year.
After recovering from injuries and thriving in Liga MX — particularly since the Club World Cup — the former Real Madrid captain believes he can still compete at the highest level and will not accept a conditional deal.
What’s Next? Saudi Arabia, MLS, or a European Return?
If no agreement is reached by year’s end, Sergio Ramos will become a free agent — and interested clubs won’t be scarce. The Saudi Pro League tried to sign him in 2023 after his exit from Paris Saint-Germain, and that door may reopen. There is also speculation surrounding a potential move to MLS or even a short-term return to Europe.
