Former Brazil International Hospitalized After Cardiac Irregularity
Brazilian midfielder Oscar, currently playing for São Paulo and formerly with Chelsea, was hospitalized after suffering cardiac irregularities during a medical test. While his condition is stable, the incident has raised new concerns about his future in football.
Oscar’s Health Scare Shocks São Paulo
A moment of alarm struck São Paulo’s training facility on Tuesday when 34-year-old midfielder Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior experienced a cardiac alteration during a stress test that was part of his recovery process from a muscle injury.
According to an official club statement, Oscar suffered “an incident involving cardiological irregularities” and was immediately taken to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein for further evaluation. The club confirmed that the player remains under observation but in clinically stable condition.
The former Chelsea playmaker reportedly fainted while on a stationary bike and was treated on site by medical staff before being transported to the hospital. The episode occurred as Oscar was entering the final phase of his recovery ahead of the 2026 preseason.
Retirement Now a Real Possibility
This is not the first health concern for Oscar, who had been monitored since August after showing mild cardiac irregularities while recovering from a spinal fracture that sidelined him for three months. At the time, doctors cleared him to continue his career, but the player publicly admitted that he would “walk away” if his heart condition posed any danger.
Sources close to the player told Brazilian media that Oscar is now considering ending his contract with São Paulo, which runs until December 2027, and retiring from professional football. Since returning to the club in 2024 after twelve years abroad, his progress has been slowed by recurring injuries to his hip, thigh, and calf. He has managed only 21 appearances and two goals since his comeback.
A U-20 World Cup champion in 2011 and a two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea, Oscar was one of the standout figures of Brazilian football in the previous decade. He represented the Seleção at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, earning 48 caps and scoring 12 goals.
