CONMEBOL’s Revolutionary Plan to Boost Actual Playing Time in South American Football
CONMEBOL announced on Monday a new plan aimed at transforming match dynamics across the continent, with the goal of getting as close as possible to 90 minutes of actual playing time. The initiative targets reducing interruptions caused by substitutions and medical attention, as well as curbing intentional delays that disrupt the game’s rhythm.
Why Does CONMEBOL Want to Change Time Management in Matches?
According to the Competitions and Operations Department, the project seeks to raise the pace and quality of the sporting spectacle in tournaments like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. The confederation emphasizes that a more fluid game not only benefits the teams but also increases competitiveness and fan appeal, including a growing audience in the United States.
What Measures Will Be Implemented to Reduce Interruptions?
The actions include stricter enforcement of the rules against unnecessary delays, yellow cards for players who intentionally slow the restart of play, and greater time control by referees. In addition, there is a call for cooperation among officials, players, coaching staff, referees, and fans to ensure the ball is in play for as long as possible.
How Will This Change Impact South American Football?
CONMEBOL argues that less wasted time means more football, which increases the physical and tactical demands on players and enhances the entertainment value for international audiences. With a faster pace, the level of competition is expected to rise, benefiting both clubs and national teams on the global stage.
