Canelo Álvarez and Peso Pluma Could Join Forces to Buy Atlas de Guadalajara
July 15, 2025, could mark a turning point in Atlas recent history. On that day, Grupo Orlegi officially announced the beginning of the sale process for the club, sparking a wave of rumors and speculation about the team future and potential buyers.
One of the names gaining traction in recent hours is that of Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez. It’s no secret that the Mexican boxer possesses a nine-figure fortune, making him a viable candidate to purchase a Liga MX team. In the past, he was linked to a potential acquisition of Chivas de Guadalajara, although it never materialized. Now, the spotlight has shifted to Guadalajara’s other club: Atlas.
But this time, Canelo wouldn’t be alone. According to media and social media reports, singer Peso Pluma could join the project as a co-investor. Both are internationally renowned figures, originally from Jalisco, and openly passionate fans of the Rojinegros a fact that has sparked excitement among supporters.
The “people candidate”
The possibility of Nicky Nicole ex-boyfriend, Peso Pluma participating in the purchase stems from the affection he has expressed for Atlas in different interviews. In 2024, the artist revealed his desire to collaborate in some way with Liga MX, and especially with the Zorros:
“Since I was a kid, I remember always going to Atlas games. I’d go to the Barra 51, which is the supporter group that sings the chants. It was always great. At some point, I’d love to get more involved in sports — especially with my team.”
Although, for now, these rumors remain unconfirmed, many fans are embracing Canelo and Peso Pluma as the “people’s candidates”: individuals with strong roots, a passion for football, and most importantly the financial power to make a serious offer.
Foreign Capital Also in the Picture
Aside from public figures like Canelo and Peso Pluma, there’s growing speculation about foreign investment funds looking to enter the Mexican football market. Atlas, with its history and potential, could be an attractive option for international investors.
Regardless of who acquires the club, the new owner must understand what Atlas represents — not just within Liga MX, but also socially and culturally. Despite the titles won between 2021 and 2022, many believe Grupo Orlegi failed to build a lasting connection with the fanbase.
The sale comes at a delicate time for the club, amid fan protests and dwindling attendance at Estadio Jalisco — signs of a disconnect between ownership and “La Fiel,” the loyal supporters.
If the purchase were to materialize with two passionate Mexican stars like Canelo and Peso Pluma, Atlas could gain not only financial stability but also a powerful emotional bond with its fans — a bond that could lead the club toward the success it truly deserves.
