Ter Stegen Doesn't Take Well to Being Neuer's Backup: "It's Very Disappointing"
The Euro hasn't even started, and there's already noise in Germany. Neuer is set to be the starting goalkeeper, and Ter Stegen isn't happy about it.
Marc-André Ter Stegen, goalkeeper for Barcelona and the German national team, described his likely bench role in the upcoming Euro Cup under coach Julian Nagelsmann as "very disappointing."
Speaking at the German team's training camp in Herzogenaurach, the day after their friendly match against Ukraine, the goalkeeper admitted that it is "not a pleasant situation," but he accepts the decision, even though he "does not agree," as "at the end of the day, you have a responsibility to the group" and he will help "as much as he can."
"I told the national coach that one thing is sport and another is human. I want everyone to be able to trust me," expressed the goalkeeper.
Similarly, Ter Stegen assured that his situation "has nothing to do" with Manuel Neuer, the presumed starting goalkeeper: "It also has nothing to do with him on a personal level. We have a good relationship," he commented.
Neuer himself, the goalkeeper for Bayern Munich, confirmed that this "is a well-known problem in the goalkeeper position," as "there has never been a coach who has allowed two goalkeepers to play" and "the decision is always difficult."
"Marc knows the situation. It must be said, it's regrettable because he really is a world-class goalkeeper who has shown good performances. But that's also part of the business," Neuer concluded.
