Nigeria See Off Algeria to Book AFCON 2025 Semifinal Spot
Nigeria delivered when it mattered most. Two second-half strikes were enough to silence Algeria and keep the title dream alive.
Nigeria Set the Tone Early
All the excitement of AFCON 2025 exclusively on beIN Sports.
From the opening whistle in Marrakech, Nigeria made their intentions clear: high tempo, aggressive pressing and physical dominance. The Super Eagles controlled much of the first half, pinning Algeria deep and creating a steady stream of chances.
Victor Osimhen went close with an early header that flew over the bar, while Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi consistently found space out wide. Despite Nigeria’s control, the breakthrough did not arrive before the interval, thanks to resilient Algerian defending and a couple of sharp saves from Luca Zidane.
Osimhen Breaks the Deadlock
The second half could not have started better for Nigeria. Less than two minutes after the restart, Calvin Bassey delivered a perfectly weighted cross from the left that found Osimhen, who rose above his marker and powered a header down past Zidane.
The opener felt inevitable. Nigeria’s intensity and belief finally translated onto the scoreboard in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarterfinal.
Akor Adams Delivers the Knockout Blow
Algeria barely had time to regroup. Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, sliding a precise pass into the path of Akor Adams. The forward burst through the defense and finished clinically to make it 2-0.
From that moment on, Nigeria were firmly in control, while Algeria struggled to respond, overwhelmed physically and tactically.
Zidane Prevents a Heavier Scoreline
The margin could have been wider. Luca Zidane produced several important stops, including a low drive from Lookman and a close-range effort that kept the score respectable.
Even the presence of Zinedine Zidane in the stands was not enough to inspire a turnaround on a night that belonged to the Super Eagles.
Nigeria March On With Authority
With this win, Nigeria advance to the semifinals of the AFCON 2025, reinforcing their status as genuine title contenders. Driven by Osimhen’s leadership, solid at the back and ruthless when it mattered, the Super Eagles sent a clear message to the rest of the tournament.
Algeria exit with frustration and unanswered questions. Nigeria, meanwhile, remain firmly on course and one step closer to continental glory.
