The Paris Saint-Germain failed to repeat their success against AS Monaco, the same team they had previously eliminated in the UEFA Champions League Playoffs.

PSG has won eight of the last ten Ligue 1 titles and comes off a historic 2025 season in which the club won every competition it played, but the current campaign in Ligue 1 has been far more competitive.

The emergence of RC Lens has left very little margin for error in the race for the title.

PSG and the unexpected defeat against Monaco

The team coached by Luis Enrique had regained the top spot in Ligue 1 after thrashing FC Metz and had also eliminated Monaco in the Champions League playoff round.

However, the defending French champions rotated several key players such as Ousmane Dembélé and Marquinhos, while Monaco — managed by Sébastien Pocognoli — arrived on a run of four matches unbeaten in Ligue 1.

Despite the 3-1 defeat, the Parisian club remained at the top of the standings, although their advantage over Lens was reduced to just one point: 57 to 56.

Key Ligue 1 matches still ahead for PSG

Even with a packed schedule, Luis Enrique’s side has maintained its pace in the domestic league, but two crucial fixtures remain on the calendar.

PSG will face Lens and Olympique Lyon on April 11 and April 19, matches that could prove decisive in the title race.

Another key factor for the Parisian club will be balancing the Champions League campaign, starting with the Round of 16 second leg against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Lens must also deal with a demanding schedule that includes the French Cup, the league clash against PSG, and a final Ligue 1 match against Lyon, which could become decisive if the title race goes down to the final weeks of the season.
