Mercedes prioritizes signing Max Verstappen for 2026 and would be willing to sacrifice one of its drivers
The potential arrival of Max Verstappen to Mercedes for the 2026 season could significantly impact the current driver lineup of the German team. Both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli face an uncertain future, as the team looks to restructure around the three-time world champion.
Russell more likely to lose his seat
George Russell appears to be the main candidate to lose his place, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current season. So far, no progress has been reported in negotiations for an extension. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli who debuted this season following Lewis Hamilton departure is believed to have signed a multi-year deal, which, in theory, secures his spot for the time being.
Italian media suggest Antonelli could be the real sacrifice
However, reports from Italy present a different scenario. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Antonelli could leave Mercedes in 2026, but not on a permanent basis. The Italian outlet points to Alpine set to receive Mercedes engines from 2026 as his potential temporary destination. A recent meeting between Toto Wolff and Flavio Briatore after the Austrian Grand Prix has only added fuel to the speculation.
Mercedes pushing hard to land Verstappen
If these reports prove accurate, Mercedes 2026 driver lineup would consist of Max Verstappen and George Russell assuming the team manages to renew the British driver's contract. According to the same source, Russell is seeking at least a two-year extension, which would mean Antonelli wouldn't return to the team until at least the 2027 season.
This option could work well for Mercedes, allowing the 18-year-old Italian talent to continue gaining valuable F1 experience while remaining part of the team's long-term plans. At the same time, Verstappen and Russell would form a formidable duo for the years ahead.
Verstappen decision holds the key
Without a doubt, the future of both Russell and Antonelli hinges largely on the decision Verstappen makes about his career. Red Bull has done everything possible to keep him even parting ways with team principal Christian Horner. However, the Dutch driver is being aggressively courted by Mercedes, and all signs point to him possibly joining the Silver Arrows for next season.
