Antonelli’s Great Feat
The biggest news from the Chinese Grand Prix was not only the victory of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, but also what this triumph meant for Italian motorsport. The young driver ended a drought of nearly 20 years without an Italian winning a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Mercedes is going through an extraordinary moment. The superiority of the German car was evident throughout the entire weekend. In the sprint race it was George Russell who collected important points, while in qualifying Antonelli also made history by becoming the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history, surpassing the record previously held by Sebastian Vettel.
The last victory by an Italian driver in the top category of motorsport dated back to the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix, when Giancarlo Fisichella took the win ahead of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.
Mercedes Sets the Pace in the Championship
As mentioned, Mercedes appears to be one step ahead of its rivals. This dominance opens the door for George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli to seriously compete for the world championship. If he manages to achieve it, Antonelli could also break another record: the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. That mark is currently also held by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title at the age of 23.
The Mercedes car has adapted perfectly to the new technical regulations. George Russell had already shown his great form by dominating the Australian Grand Prix, and in China he confirmed it again by finishing in second place, establishing himself as a serious title contender.
However, what Andrea Kimi Antonelli has done has simply been extraordinary. In Australia he started from second position and, with a very intelligent race, managed to stay close to his teammate to finish on the podium. But in China the entire weekend belonged to him.
He secured pole position, set the fastest lap, and ultimately claimed victory, delivering a historic performance. Kimi Antonelli is no longer a promise — he is a reality, and his talent behind the wheel is evident.
Ferrari and Hamilton Look to Respond
The competition, however, will not be easy. Mercedes will have to measure itself directly against Ferrari, which also showed signs of improvement. Lewis Hamilton returned to the podium with the Italian team, something he had not achieved since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, proving that the red car is also ready to fight.
Now it remains to be seen how Antonelli handles the pressure and how the other teams evolve as they adapt to the new cars and regulations. The next Grand Prix in Japan could offer a direct battle between the two Mercedes drivers, who will be looking to repeat their dominance with another 1–2 finish.
Italy has had 44 drivers who have won at least one Grand Prix in Formula 1 history. The most successful of them all is Alberto Ascari, with 13 victories. It does not seem unreasonable to think that, with his youth and the competitive car provided by Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli could one day surpass that mark and become the most successful Italian driver of all time.
