Mike Tyson Tried to Stop This Fight: His Warning to Terence Crawford Before Facing “Canelo” Alvarez
Crawford’s undefeated record could be at risk after his decision to face the Mexican star in a highly anticipated fight that marks the debut of TKO Boxing.
The fight between Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) and Terence Crawford (41-0-0, 31 KOs) is getting closer, and like every major bout, everyone expects a spectacular show, as opinions about this clash between the two boxers have been plentiful.
Ahead of the September 13 showdown, one of the authoritative voices in boxing, Mike Tyson, was among the first to weigh in, even before the fight was officially confirmed.
Mike Tyson’s warning to Terence Crawford
The boxing legend isn’t convinced about Terence Crawford facing the Mexican, especially given the sacrifice the American will make in a fight where the undisputed super middleweight title is at stake.
To make this grand spectacle happen, Crawford will need to move up two weight classes to face Canelo, something Tyson considers a crazy and ill-advised move.
“Brother, he can do whatever he wants, but I don’t think it’s a good idea. I just don’t think so. What would he gain from it? I don’t know… I don’t think it’s a good idea. There have been people who’ve done crazy things like that before, but I don’t think he needs to do it,” Tyson told ES News over a year ago.
The fight will be the main event of TKO Boxing’s debut, with UFC President Dana White announced as the lead promoter, backed by Turki Alalshikh.
Mike Tyson’s message could be interpreted as advice against taking the fight, but everything is now set for a grand event.
The World Boxing Council expects a great fight
Mauricio Sulaimán, President of the World Boxing Council, told fans that they can expect a modern classic in boxing when Canelo and Terence Crawford face off at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
“Canelo vs. Crawford has all the elements to be a superfight, intertwining the legendary sporting rivalry between Mexico and the United States, illustrated by Chávez vs. Taylor, Junior Jones, who knocked out Marco Antonio Barrera, and then Erik Morales, who knocked out Junior Jones. There are so many truly great boxing matches between Mexico and the United States,” he stated.
“This fight, in particular, is at the highest level in a football stadium, with the undisputed championship on the line. It couldn’t get any better,” he added.
