The Australian claimed his 4-6 6-4 6-4 victory in just shy of two and a half hours after losing the first set to the American.
Indeed the contest remained tight throughout the second and third sets, too, but De Minaur managed to make the most of his break-point opportunities when they came.
De Minaur will play Cameron Norrie in the ROund of 32 after the Briton won his match against Mackenzie McDonald 6-2 6-3, knocking out another American in the Californian tournament.
The pair has an even 2-2 head-to-head record, but have not played since 2024, when Norrie beat De Minaur in the United Cup across three sets.
However, De Minaur claimed the victory in their only previous ATP 1000 contest, beating Norrie 7-5 6-4 at the Canada ATP 1000 in 2023.
In other good news for Australia, Rinky Hijikata caused an upset when he beat No.20 seed Luciano Darderi, coming for a set down to claim a 4-6 6-2 6-4 win that put him into the last 32.
