Yamal salvages draw against Newcastle
Lamine Yamal scored a penalty with the last kick of the game to snatch Barcelona a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
Harvey Barnes thought he had gifted Newcastle a slender advantage to take to Camp Nou next week, but Malick Thiaw gifted Barcelona a way back into the game.
Just four minutes in, Joan Garcia spilled a tame Sandro Tonali header from a corner, but Pau Cubarsi was hovering behind him to clear the danger off the line.
Garcia then made a stretching save to keep out Anthony Elanga's low drive, while Dan Burn's poked block only narrowly rolled wide of his own goal at the other end shortly after.
William Osula then sent a looping header over the bar, but Barcelona improved in the second, with Robert Lewandowski firing their best chance just past the far post.
Newcastle thought they had taken a 74th-minute lead. An unmarked Barnes curled a strike off the post before Joelinton turned in the rebound, but the flag was immediately raised against him.
However, Newcastle found its opening in the 86th minute. Jacob Murphy curled a lovely cross in from the right, and Barnes drifted off his marker to scuff his shot in via a deflection off Garcia's face.
Barcelona clawed its way back level in the 96th minute, though. Dani Olmo checked back inside, drawing a foul from Thiaw in the box, and Yamal sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to pick out the bottom-left corner.
