Everton revives European hopes with win at Newcastle
Newcastle United twice came from behind yet still fell to a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Everton in a Premier League thriller at St James’ Park.
Substitute Thierno Barry proved to be the matchwinner in the 83rd minute after Jacob Murphy thought he secured at least a point for Newcastle, while Jordan Pickford pulled off an incredible save in stoppage-time to clinch victory.
It was Everton that opened the scoring in the 19th minute, with Jarrad Branthwaite escaping Sandro Tonali from James Garner's corner and glancing his header in off the far post.
Jacob Ramsey, who was substituted at the break because of illness, equalised in the 32nd minute when his strike deflected in off Branthwaite, but Beto restored Everton's lead 105 seconds later after he reacted quickest when Nick Pope spilled his attempted catch of Dwight McNeil's shot.
Beto spurned a golden chance to double Everton's lead after going through on goal and striking the crossbar, and Newcastle made the most of that reprieve when Murphy's volley deflected in off Idrissa Gueye, bur Barry turned Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's low centre in off his backside just 74 seconds later.
Newcastle pushed for a third equaliser and went close when Tonali connected perfectly with a volley from outside the box, but Pickford pushed the strike onto the crossbar and Everton continued its strong away form.
Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite urged his side to believe it can finish in the European places.
"That's our aim," he said. "We want to be in Europe, and we've got to pick up points. Why not believe?
"It's a massive win. We knew coming here was going to be difficult, but we had to get a result. We dug in, and then the way we bounced back from conceding.
"The best save I've ever seen, I don't know how he has pulled it off.
"We know how much of a top goalkeeper he is. When he does things like that, it's magic; he's kept us in the game at the end of the day."
