Middlesbrough fails to capitalise on Coventry slip
Middlesbrough missed the chance to move level on points with EFL Championship leader Coventry City after it was thrashed 3-0 by Watford at Vicarage Road.
Having seen Coventry fall to its first league defeat of the season to Wrexham on Saturday (AEDT), Rob Edwards was made to endure an unhappy return to his former club.
Watford captain Imran Louza opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Luca Kjerrumgaard doubled the hosts' advantage just after the half-hour mark.
The win was sealed four minutes after the restart as Kjerrumgaard brought up his brace, moving Javi Gracia's team up to 10th in the Championship standings.
The Hornets have now won four successive home league fixtures, while also picking up a first clean sheet of the season at the 13th attempt.
Boss Javier Gracia, who only recently returned to the club, was happy to have earned such a solid win.
"I'm happy because it was the result we were looking for after our last defeat in Coventry," he said.
"We have to recognise in the beginning of the game, the opponent had more control of the game, they dominated some minutes without clear chances.
"But later after some minutes, we were able to take control and create some chances and we scored some fantastic goals.
"In the end, we were better and we got a clean sheet. That's really important for us and it's our first of the season."
Edwards insisted his side would use this as a learning experience, but couldn't hide his frustration at missing the chance to close the gap on Coventry.
"It's a really disappointing result. I was actually really excited about this game and I thought we started well," he said.
"It was about managing those moments and the biggest part of our message to the boys, as soon as we lose it, make sure we manage their counter-attacks and stop them switching it because they have pace in the wide areas, and we didn't do that.
"There was not loads and loads wrong, and we got into areas loads of times, but didn't make it count. At both ends of the pitch, we were second best. We'll all learn from this."
